Virtual birth doula support works through one thing above all: communication.
Throughout pregnancy, we build the relationship and prepare together. And because I won't be physically in the room with you during labor, we place extra attention on preparing for the physical side of birth ahead of time.
We'll spend time learning and practicing comfort measures, and I'll provide additional resources you can return to during labor. The goal is for you — and anyone supporting you, if applicable — to feel familiar with the tools available to you before you need them.
What I can’t do with my own hands, we prepare you to have within reach.
When labor begins, communication becomes the bridge between where you are and where I am.
You can text me. Call me. Put me on video. Tell me what you're feeling, what you're noticing, what you're wondering, or simply that you think something may be starting.
From the beginning of labor through birth, I'm on the other side of the phone.
Sometimes that might mean a quick exchange in the middle of the night when you're wondering whether those contractions mean something. Sometimes it's a longer phone call while we talk through what you're experiencing and what might feel helpful next.
During active labor, we may move between texts, phone calls, and video depending on what you need and what's happening around you. You can reach out for reassurance, information, guidance, or simply to have someone familiar help you make sense of the moment.
If you have a support person with you, they have access to me, too.
They can text or call me directly, ask questions, keep me updated on what's happening, or reach out for guidance on how they can support you in the moment.
And if a question or decision comes up, you can ask for a moment, call me, and we can talk through what's happening and the options in front of you.
You don’t need to stay connected to me every minute for me to be there for you.
We may talk for five minutes or an hour. We may connect, disconnect, and reconnect throughout labor. The communication can move with the experience.
What matters is that we keep that window open.
I'll be there on my side of it — and I'll encourage you to keep me connected to what's happening on yours.
